WHAT THE SQUADRON OFFERS

142 Mimico offers a variety of teams that any cadet can try out for! These teams help cadets create a stronger bond with their fellow peers and allows them to learn new skills!

FLAG PARTY

The 142 Flag Party with Arms is a both a ceremonial and competition drill team made up of 5 cadets (1 Commander, 1 Jr. Colour NCO, 1 Escort, 2 Guards). They are selected from the ranks of the units Drill Without Arms Teams and are generally recognized as having amongst the strongest drill, dress and deportment in the unit. They work each training night to guard and honour our unit banner and the Canadian Flag during opening and closing parade. They also compete against other units for the title of best flag party in the area. All Drill Without Arms team members are welcome to try out however only 4 selected. During the 2024/2025 training year, the Flag Party with Arms placed first.

DRILL TEAM

The 142 Drill Without Arms team is a competition team made up 16 cadets (15 members and 1 commander). They are selected by tryout within the first few weeks of each training year and then meet once a week to learn, practice and master both complex commanded drill and a silent routine. Throughout the year the drill team builds knowledge and skill within the unit. They compete against other teams from different units sometimes multiple times a year fostering good relations with others teams and the cadet unit as a whole. All are welcome to try out however only 15 cadets are selected. In recent years, our team has never placed less than 3rd and always does well in all categories.

MARKSMANSHIP

Marksmanship is one of the most popular cadet training activities. It focuses on teaching cadets the proper use and safe handling of firearms for recreational purposes only. The marksmanship program is based on Olympic-style competition. Self-confidence, acceptance of responsibility and sports etiquette are just some of the life skills acquired from the training. A healthy respect for firearms, the development of proficient use of rifles for sport and recreational purposes, and an improvement in self-discipline are additional benefits. Cadets use the Daisy 853C air rifle that fires a .177 calibre pellet Throughout the year, cadets participate in a series of competitions at the local level that culminate in zone and territorial/provincial competitions and the annual National Cadet Marksmanship Championship.

 

GROUND SCHOOL

The Air Cadet program offers a pilot ground school course for cadets who wish to apply for the Glider Pilot or Power Pilot Training Course during the summer. It is geared towards the material required for the qualifying exam held in January.

This class is mandatory for all cadets applying for either training course throughout the program. There are a limited number of positions available for summer training at each unit so studiousness in this course is imperative.

  • Theory of Flight

  • Meteorology

  • Navigation

  • Airmanship and Radio Communications

  • Engines and E6B Flight Computer (Power applicants only)
